Winter Vacations with Teens to Bigfork Montana

If your teenages threaten mutiny at the mention of your next family getaway here are a few tips that might help.

A teenagers life fills up pretty fast.  Family vacations can take a backseat to dating, sports, music, driving, and jobs.

Put them in chrage.  A teens enthusiasm comes from the critical role of being in charge from the start.  Have them reserach possible vacation spots on the internet, get info from their friends, and from magazines. Have them list the possible destinations to discuss with the entire family.

Select a Destination that fits the entire family’s needs, dreams and goals.

Teens want tons of organized day and evening activites and lots of people around their own age and a sense of adventure with physical activities.

From experience I have learned that adventure and physical activities let a teen drop their guard and open up while still maintaining their “cool”  bringing them back into the “family” unit as a “happy camper”.

Hand them the map.  Have your teen map out the route you will take and plan all the stops along the way for lunch, shopping, skiing, sled dog trips, museums, music hot sports, sleigh rides, building a snowman, and/or snowboarding.

Setting the ground rules early avoids arguments and miscommunication while on the road.

Be sure to put the ground rules in writing.  Ground Rules might include….How often they should check in with you. What time is the evening curfew. Who should they call incase of emergency. What is the daily budget.

Enjoy the journey – relax be kids again and see the world through your teens eyes all fresh and new.

Give your teen breathing space.  They need time to pursue their individual interests.  Both you and your teenagers need free time and privacy.

Keep it Fun by being flexible, offer choices not demands, resist the urge to turn everything into a lesson.
